When washing fresh spinach use warm water (it removes the dirt
much faster), then rinse in water to which you have added a little
vinegar. Works like a charm!
Toilet Overflow
At least once in life we all get to experience the toilet
overflowing. We flush it and then stand there and watch it
happen, believing all the time that the water really isn't
going to go over the edge. Some quick action can prevent an
overflow. When you sense it coming, quickly remove the tank
lid and reach down and push the flush valve closed. It
covers the tennis ball-sized opening in the bottom of the
tank. Emergency over!

Making Hamburgers?
1/2 cup of ground beef weighs approximately 1/4 pound. Useful info
for quickly measuring out "quarter pounders" or preparing patties for
the freezer that will thaw fast when needed.
***
Shine Copper-Bottom Pans
If you have copper-bottom pans, they've probably gotten
grungy-looking over the years. You can clean and shine them
up fairly quickly using a mixture of lemon juice, salt, and
elbow grease. Squeeze on the lemon juice, sprinkle the
salt, rub with a cloth, and rinse.
***
Artificial sweeteners can be used to kill ants.
Leave a packet under sink or where ants are seen.
Open one end.

Kids Make Dessert
Here's a dessert that's easy and fun for kids to
make--instant pudding! There's no need for a parent to mix
the pudding with a whisk or beaters; just let the kids
combine the ingredients in a container with an airtight lid
and have them shake it until the pudding is well mixed.
Pour into serving containers and put in the refrigerator
for the time specified on the package. Any child who can
read can make this dessert.

Whenever I make a sandwich or anything where you need to spread butter
or mayonnaise I use a spoon instead of a knife. It is easier to get
it out of the jar, especially when it is almost empty, and just as
easy to spread it around as with a knife.

Giving Seeds As Gifts
Do you gather seeds from your flowers for next year's
plantings? Consider giving some of these treasures to
family and friends as gifts. You can now easily design your
own seed packets for this purpose.
All you need is a color printer and to be fairly
comfortable working with graphics. If you have a scanner,
you can even display pictures from your own garden on the
front of the packets.
*****
To cook perfect hard-boiled eggs, place the eggs in cold water and
bring to a boil. As soon as a rolling boil is reached, cover the pan
and turn off the heat. Allow to rest for 10 minutes.
****
When you are pouring any kind of carbonated soda and you
pour a little too much at once, put your finger over the lip of the
glass. When the foam-over reaches your finger it will never go any
higher, preventing a messy spill.
*****
Homemade Shower Cleaner
Looking for an alternative to expensive daily shower
cleaners? Try this! In a 32 oz. spray bottle, pour in 8 oz.
of rubbing alcohol then top it off with water. After each
shower, spray the walls and shower curtain. You won't have to rinse.
*****
Stuff a miniature marshmallow in the bottom of a sugar cone to
prevent ice cream drips.
****
Use a meat baster to "squeeze" your pancake batter onto the hot griddle -
perfectly shaped pancakes every time.
****
To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.
****
To prevent egg shells from cracking, add a pinch of salt to the water
before hard-boiling.
****
Run your hands under cold water before pressing Rice Krispies
treats in the pan-the marshmallow won't stick to your fingers.
****
To get the most juice out of fresh lemons, bring them to room
temperature and roll them under your palm against the kitchen
counter before squeezing.
****
To easily remove burnt-on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or two
of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to a
boil on stove-top - skillet will be much easier to clean.
****
Spray your Tupperware with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in
tomato-based sauces - no more stains.
****
When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking pan, use a bit of the dry
cake mix instead - no white mess on the outside of the cake.
****
If you accidentally over-salt a dish while it's still cooking, drop in a
peeled potato - it absorbs the excess salt for an instant "fix me up".
***
Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator -it will
keep for weeks.
***
Brush beaten egg white over pie crust before baking to yield a
beautiful glossy finish.
***
Place a slice of apple in hardened brown sugar to soften it back up.
***
When boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to help bring
out the corn's natural sweetness.
*****

*****
When you get a splinter, reach for the scotch tape before resorting to
tweezers or a needle. Simply put the scotch tape over the
splinter, then pull it off. Scotch tape removes most splinters
painlessly and easily.
*****
NOW Look what you can do with Alka-Seltzer:
Clean a toilet - drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets, wait twenty minutes,
brush, and flush.
The citric acid and effervescent action clean vitreous china.
*****
Clean a vase - to remove a stain from the bottom of a glass
vase or cruet, fill with water and drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets.
Polish jewelry - drop two Alka-Seltzer tablets into a glass of
water and immerse the jewelry for two minutes.
*****
Clean a thermos bottle - fill the bottle with water, drop in four
Alka-Seltzer tablets, and let soak for an hour (or longer, if necessary).
Unclog a drain - clear the sink drain by dropping three Alka-Seltzer
tablets down the drain followed by a cup of Heinz White Vinegar.
Wait a few minutes, then run the hot water.
*****
If your VCR has a year setting on it, which most do, you will not be able
to use the programmed recording feature after 12/31/99.
Don't throw it away. Instead, set it for the year 1972 as the days are
the same as the year 2000.
