Love potions have been described since the fourth century B.C. Today

there are thousands of foods thought to have aphrodisiac properties.

therefore, passionate"

"Any food can be your

magic potion....if you believe it."

Theophrastus (4th century B.C.), a Greek botanist, recommended a love

potion that included a leafy plant called mandrake soaked in vinegar.

Supposedly mandrake contains substances that create the sensation of

"feeling high". According to ancient Indian recipes, love can be

enhanced with a mixture of black pepper, honey, chili peppers, and

mandrake. Apicius, who lived during the reign of Julius Caesar and

authored the first known cookbook, suggests a stew of onions, pine

kernels, and various herbs as an effective love potion

Today there are thousands of foods presumed to have aphrodisiac

properties. These include (raw) seafood, chocolate, wine, spices, and

even sugar. An Italian psychiatrist, Willy Pasini, has actually

researched foods that supposedly have romantic properties. Dr. Pasini

discovered during animal experiments that maize, a type of corn,

contains a compound called "tryptophan". He believes that tryptophan

combines with other chemicals in the brain to act as an aphrodisiac.

Maize is a component of polenta, a trendy carbohydrate dish served in

most restaurants as a potato alternative.

To intensify passion, Dr. Passini also recommends that you add sparkling

wine, fruit, and chocolate to your meals. Apparently, however, Dr.

Passini is not the first to promote fruit as an aphrodisiac. Apricots

and peaches are considered erotic symbols by the Chinese. Ancient Greeks

celebrated each new crop of figs, while ancient Jews considered fruit an

important part of the mating ritual.

A Proven Sex-Drive Enhancer

Of course, this is something that has been of interest for centuries. If

you're a man, you have a lot of options. First, you can experiment with

herbal treatments like oriental ginseng, which has a long and

distinguished history as a sexual energizer for men. The compounds

inside this root, called ginsenosides, are known to increase resistance

to stress, improve hormonal balance, benefit metabolism, and aid skin

and muscle tone. Look for an extract in capsule or liquid form that has

been standardized for ginsenoside content and follow the dosage

recommendations on the product. Oriental ginseng is a stimulant, so use

it with caution (if at all) if you have high blood pressure, insomnia,

or anxiety.

Men can also try the ayurvedic herb ashwaganda (which means "smells like

a horse"), sometimes called Indian ginseng (Withania somnifera).

Ashwaganda is sold in health-food stores and comes in capsules; just

follow dosage recommendations on the product. There are many other

Chinese herbal formulas thought to increase male sexual function. Ask a

practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine about what's available. The

tonic ho shou wu, from the root of Polygonum multiflorum, is said to be

a powerful sexual tonic when consumed regularly. It is believed to

increase sexual energy, improve sperm production in men, and promote

fertility in women. Paradoxically, a proven sex-drive enhancer for women

is the male hormone testosterone. Women produce their own testosterone,

and reputable scientific studies show that tiny additional amounts can

increase libido dramatically. One type of synthetic testosterone,

formulated for women in menopause, is called Estratest. If you're

interested in trying it, consult a gynecologist.

An herbal possibility for women is the Mexican plant damiana (Turnera

diffusa), which has a reputation as a female aphrodisiac. Not that much

is known about it, but you can find damiana preparations in health-food

stores. Again, follow dosage recommendations on the label. Whichever of

these appeals to you, try it for a few months and see what it can do for

you. If it works, great. If not, there's no point in continuing the

treatment. Of course, before spending money on substances like these,

you might want to consider other ways to boost sexual energy. Both

physical and mental well-being are important to healthy sex. Think about

the interplay of emotional charge, mental imagery, and body responses

associated with sex. Hypnotherapy and guided imagery therapy can help

you make the most of the mind-body connection in overcoming sexual prob

lems. Many experts, myself included, say that the greatest aphrodisiac

is the human mind.

Yohimbe: Viagra Au Natural

ATTENTION: SEE WARNING ABOUT YOHIMBE AT THIS LINK:

African tree bark offers cure for erectile dysfunction.

By Rita Kennen

Like a snake, the problem first reared its head in the Garden of Eden.

Don't you imagine there were a few nights when Adam couldn't get it up

with Eve? By what mystical power did he rise to the occasion?

The scenario may have been bleak. Or perhaps he discovered yohimbe, a

home grown aphrodisiac that does the trick.

It really works

"I've taken yohimbe and I've given it to men and it definitely works,"

says Ken Rifkin, a Portland, Ore., naturopathic physician and

acupuncturist.

Pick your potion, yohimbe or Viagra? Rifkin says you can't compare the

two. Yohimbe comes from the bark of a West Africian tree. It's been

widely used in Europe for the last 75 years and became popular in this

country in the last 30. Viagra is the product of the giant

pharmaceutical house, Pfizer.

Although both increase blood flow to the penis, Viagra does it by

relaxing the muscles that line the arteries of the penis. Yohimbe works

by stimulating production of the hormone norepinephrine, essential for

erections.

Yohimbe bark combines several compounds, however yohimbine is where it's

strength lies.

The whole herb yohimbe is sold as a dietary supplement, but for best

results Rifkin advises, "Look for products that contain yohimbe and

yohimbine hydrochloride, which is the main alkaloid."

People shouldn't take yohimbe lightly. Side effects include elevated

blood pressure and heart rate, irritability, sweating, nausea, vomiting

and headaches.

"You can get pretty revved up because much of the yohimbe you buy is

mixed with ginseng and caffeine," Rifkin says. "People taking blood

pressure medicine should be especially cautious."

Unfortunately, yohimbe doesn't do a thing for women. Rifkin says it

works fairly quickly for men. He advises taking it 30 to 60 minutes

before having sex.
