Buy a cheap serrated knife and keep it just for cutting tomatoes.
Wash Produce Immediately...then let family members
know that the fruits and vegetables are ready to eat.
A potato peeler used on cold butter will get you just what you need for toast.
Freezing bacon....save the
heavier waxed inner bags from cereal boxes, open them to full
size, and place fresh bacon strips (one strip at a time) on the
waxed paper....fold the waxed paper over to cover,
then place another strip of bacon,
roll to cover, etc. Then simply wrap that section in another plastic
bag, date, and freeze. Now you can easily get just one slice at a time..
To keep applesauce from molding while in its glass jar, turn over and
store in your refrigerator upside down. This makes your applesauce
last much longer with no mold floating on top of it.
Dilute butter with oil so the butter doesn't
burn as quickly when sautéing.
To keep parsley fresh for in your refrigerator just put it in a glass,
fill with water and cover with the plastic bag Use a rubber band around the plastic
bag and squeeze the air out. Stays fresh 2 to 3 weeks.
Sweet Sinks
To freshen up a sink with a disposal, use a coarsely cut
lemon and drop into the disposal. Run the disposal until
the lemon is gone.
Get Rid Of Unwanted Odors?
Absorene: the best method of removing cigarette smell
from books is Absorene paper and book cleaner. It's a pink clay that you
apply like a sponge to the front and back of books. It absorbs the
smell. On the ends of the books, apply very gently. The stuff is magic!
You can order it through the Brodart catalog, or write to the Absorene
MFG Co. at 1609 N. 14th St., St Louis, MO 63106 USA. Terrific stuff. Two
cans will last all year!
Coffee Grounds will absorb odors.
White Vinegar will absorb odors.
Watermelon De-Seeding Tip
First, cut the watermelon into quarters. Then cut each
quarter lengthwise into three wedges. Then cut each wedge
lengthwise at the seed line and lift off the top piece.
Using a knife, you will now be able to scrape away almost
all of the seeds very quickly.

To get the most juice out of a lemon, try cutting off one end of
lemon. Put in microwave on high for 45 seconds. Carefully take it
out, point cut end to where you want the juice and all will come out
with zest. Great for iced tea etc., instead of taking time to cut all
of those little wedges. Store what is left in small custard bowl and
use again and again.
Head Lice help from the NPA
Rosemary oil is great for sinus...
To keep celery fresh for a long, long time, take it out of the plastic
and wrap it in foil.
Save cottage cheese and
yogurt containers and use them to put food waste into before
throwing them away helps to eliminate odor. Helps elimenate fruit flies too.
Get rid of Japanese beetles by planting peonies
they attract a wasp that kills them.
When the outside of your pots and pans, oven and grill racks etc.,
become covered with dirt and grime that takes endless hours to scrub
clean, try this: Carefully place your items in a clean plastic trash
bag. Pour into the bag 1-2 cups of ammonia and close tight. Let sit
overnight. Be sure you have lots of ventilation when you open the
bag! Remove the items and wash in hot, soapy water. You will find
that the dirt and grime comes off with hardly any "elbow grease".
Dog hair grows in cycles. When it reaches a certain length
determined by the individual dog's genetic makeup, it stops
growing, then dies. That's when shedding begins. Your dog
may be slightly itchy during shedding, as the dead hairs
can cause its skin to itch. Owners can help relieve that
slight discomfort by brushing their dog's hair.
Packing Tip
When you go on vacation, designate one suitcase as the
dirty clothes hamper. Just have everyone toss dirty clothes
in it (you may need more than one). Then, when you get back
from your trip, carry that suitcase straight to your
laundry area. The rest of the suitcases can go directly to
family members' bedrooms for unpacking.
Never discourage anyone who continually makes progress, no matter how slow.

No need to hunt for the kitchen trash bags. Take them out of the box
and put them (still folded) into the bottom of the trash can. Pull
out one to line the trash can. Now the others are just waiting
underneath until you need them.
PUZZLED???
There is nothing more frustrating than a puzzle with a lost
piece. It may not be lost. It may be mixed in a box with
another puzzle. This trick works especially well with small
children's puzzles to help prevent just such a mix-up. When
you first open up the box, mark each puzzle piece with a
letter, then mark the puzzle board and the inside of the
box with the same letter. After the children have finished
the puzzle and are ready to put it back in the box, they
can match the letter on the back of the pieces to the box.
Counting the pieces before the puzzle is put away will
insure that all pieces of the puzzle are back in the box.
Toothpaste as Cleaner
To remove crayon marks from painted walls, put a dab of
white toothpaste on a damp cloth and rub gently. The mild
abrasives in the toothpaste take the marks off easily.
Pet Advice
Chocolate is considered a beloved human treat, but it is a
no-no for pets. The effects of chocolate are more or less
severe depending on whether or not your pet is allergic to
it. At the very least, chocolate can cause stomach upset.
Poinsettia plants are poisonous, though mildly so, causing
irritation to the gastrointestinal tract.
Mistletoe berries are very poisonous. Even one or two
berries of this plant may be fatal to a pet.
Don't let your pets drink from the Christmas tree stand if
you have added a chemical to lengthen the tree's life
Don't let your pets overeat.
TemupPedic pillow helps stop painful neck and shoulder pain from pinched nerve.
Kitchen tips from Chinese feng shui:
The best kitchen tip of all is to have a kitchen that is uncluttered,
clean and organized. According to the Chinese, how we keep our rice
is of the utmost importance. Our spices and salt represent our
wealth, as do our teas so it is essential to keep them organized,
clean and in attractive jars and containers.
A clean kitchen is very desirable because old food energy that is
decomposing in the refrigerator and under the stove and oven cause us
to loose prosperity. So spend a weekend really cleaning these
appliances and arranging pots and pans, silverware and food storage
areas with a sense of pride. Not only will cooking go more easily,
your prosperity will increase and you will be healthier.
To reduce food and other odors (even cigarette smoke!), combine 1 cup
vinegar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground cloves, 1 teaspoon
allspice in a microwave-proof dish and heat until almost boiling. Set
out in the room, and soon the room will be odor-free.
When you can't
get a jar's lid to twist off, just take a teaspoon (spoon end) and put
under the lip of the lid and pry up gently. That breaks the seal and
voila, it's opened!
To remove smoke odors from clothes, run a sink or tub of
hot water, add vinegar, hang the garment in the bathroom
and close the door. The vinegar will absorb the odor.
When using a meat mallet to tenderize meat, instead of just bashing
away with the mallet and losing half of the meat, place a piece of
plastic wrap onto the meat and then tenderize in the normal way. It
saves the meat from breaking up and keeps the mallet clean.
To Keep from getting fat...take your calcium with Vitamin D.
For an invigorating bath, gather together 3 to 4 sprigs of fresh lemon
basil, lavender, jasmine and rosemary. Tie this bouquet with twine or
ribbon and hang from your faucet over the tub. Run steamy hot water over
the herbs. Then add a few drops of bergamot oil to the bathwater.
Feel tension melt away as you breathe in
the fresh aroma.
Good Coffee Tips
Following these tips can help insure a great pot of coffee.
-Always begin with fresh, cold water. Hot water from the
tap may have a higher percentage of minerals, which can
alter the flavor.
-Keep your brewer clean. Any build up in the filter basket,
pot, or brewer can produce an undesirable taste.
-Keep your beans or ground coffee covered and in the
refrigerator.
-Measure accurately. Weak or overly strong coffee can be
avoided by using two tablespoons (one average coffee
measure) for every six-ounce cup.
-Remove the grinds as soon as brewing stops.
Brew only the amount needed. Coffee usually only holds
well for about 20 minutes.
Tomatoes - When they are very plentiful, bring them in, rinse well
under cold water, place when nearly dry on a cookie sheet in the
freezer. When hard frozen, remove from the cookie sheet and place in
large Ziplock bag in freezer. In fall or winter, remove needed number
from bag and holding under running cool water, peel with paring knife
(really easy) and core and cut into chunks or puree in food processor.
They taste super and it takes no time at all!
Annual Furnace/AC Check
If your furnace/AC system is more than a few years old, ask
your heating and air conditioning service company to call
you annually for an inspection and servicing of your unit.
They are happy to do this to keep you as a customer and
they appreciate your loyalty. You benefit because you know
the service will be performed on schedule, and you don't
have to remember to make the call. This is not a free
service, but it does offer some guarantee that you won't be
roasting in August or freezing in February!
Keep a bamboo skewer stick near the toaster - it's the perfect thing
to remove hot toast without burning your fingers or risking
electrocution by using a fork or knife.
For easy cleanup of a crockpot, put dishwasher detergent (such as
Cascade) in it and fill with warm water. Let sit overnight and rinse
out the next day. Any burned on material may take a little extra
rubbing, but not much.
I store my plastic bags from the supermarket in leftover paper towel
rolls - simply stuff them in and throw them in a drawer - takes up no
space!
Stickers placed on new glass or chinaware are always a pain to get
off. Here's my approach: rub them with a sturdy paper towel and a
little peanut butter. The oil and the abrasiveness of the ground
peanuts takes 'em right off, clean as a whistle. It's weird but
it works.
To cook pasta when burner space is limited, bring water to a boil, put
in pasta, bring to boil again, cover pot, take off heat and let sit
while you use the burner to cook/heat something else. The finer the
pasta, the less time it takes to cook but I find that 5-7 minutes in
the hot water is sufficient for fine angel hair, and few minutes more
for thin spaghetti, etc. And it doesn't overcook.
Frost-Free Car Windows
If you don't have a garage and you live in an area where
houses are relatively close together, park your car
overnight between your and your neighbor's houses. If you
do, your car has a better chance of being frost-free in the
morning than if you leave it out in the open.
New uses for 'junk' envelopes:
Lots of junk mail includes return envelopes that are rarely
used. Rather than recycle these envelopes, save them.
They're perfect for sending notes to school, sending money
for the bake sale, grocery lists, or many other uses that
don't require a "good" envelope. Don't send your junk
envelope in the mail, though, even with a new stamp. Most
"junk" envelopes include return addresses, bar codes, and
prepaid indicias (that is, the box in the stamp area) that
won't "work" for individuals (they're for bulk mail).
Wash Can Tops
Always rinse the tops of cans before you open them. This is
especially important if you use a hand-held can opener that
allows the tops of cans to fall into the contents.
When making those wonderful recipes in the oven that tend to spill
over and create smoke and a horrible burnt odor. Avoid it by taking
salt and shaking over the spill. It is amazing. Not only takes care
of bad odor, helps clean up when oven cools!
I use baking soda to clean my white porcelain sinks. It's not as
damaging to the finish as cleanser, yet is abrasive enough to get out
the black marks left by pans, etc.
I have found that the tops from "squeeze" catsup and vegetable oil
bottles are identical except that most oil bottles don't have a "flip
top" like the catsup bottle. When I finish a catsup I wash the cap
and put it on my vegetable oil, then when I want just a "squirt" of
oil - there it is!
In order to get all
the tomato paste out of a can, open one end of can, turn over onto a
small plate or something flat, open other end and push lid through.
You will have all the paste out of the can.
Keep ginger fresh: Store it immersed in red wine
in a sealed jar. Cut off what you need and replace it in the wine for
future use. It last's quite long and the flavour is not affected.
After you have made something gooey (like pie crust) in a bowl or on
your counter, rub table salt all over to make clean up easy. The salt
will bring all the gook into a manageable ball.
Restaurants in Mexico will serve only genuine Spanish rice to
preserve the aroma of their cuisine. They know that arroz by any
other name smells as wheat.
PRIZED BEST HINT ON THIS PAGE
Having trouble getting your children to eat vegetables? Chop carrots
and zucchini very finely in a food processor and add them to your
spaghetti sauce. They absorb the taste of the sauce very well, and
your kids won't know this delicious stuff is good for them!
(Actually you can add any vegetable and it just gets more delicious)
To avoid that pasty, flour taste in your pie crusts and cookies, dust
the rolling area with powdered sugar. It does the same job as flour
and bakes nicely into the crust or cookie.
Burn your pan???
Put a little white vinegar in the pan and
bring it to the boil for 3 minutes. One wipe with the wash cloth
again and the muck should be gone.
Put a slit into the center of a small paper plate and slip a popsicle
stick through it. Kids have a treat and the mess drips onto the
plate making clean-up a cinch.
When peaches are plentiful ... slice them, cutting off
any bruised portions, and adding a little sugar and a squeeze of lemon
juice. Then make a package of orange or apricot Jell-O following
the instructions on the box. Pour the Jell-O over the peaches and
voila, they keep covered in the refrigerator for up to a week.
