The most precious valentine present you will ever receive

is the heart that beats within your own chest. It is

important to keep it healthy. When we put on added weight,

these fat cells must be constantly nourished along with our

healthy cells. As a result, the body must produce miles of

extra capillaries and arteries just to service all the

extra cells. Thus the extra weight places excess stress on

your heart, causing high blood pressure and even starving

the heart of needed oxygen. Give yourself the best

valentine by beginning to change your lifestyle to one of

healthy choices. Strive to lose weight gradually, maybe a

pound or two at a time, and begin a regular exercise

program.

HEARTBURN

Most people think heartburn is caused by eating too much

spicy food. While spicy foods can definitely contribute to

heartburn, there are other causes, as well. One of these is

high-fat foods such as those made with butter; also red

meat, and sad to say in the month of February,

chocolate--everyone's favorite love symbol! Onions seem to

be a culprit too. Even a small amount of these foods can

set off a heartburn episode.

You don't have to give up the foods you enjoy forever, but

don't fight fire with fire. Give your body and esophagus

time to heal after a bout of heartburn. Eat more bland

foods like complex carbohydrates that absorb stomach acid,

such as rice, potatoes, and pasta.

WALK DOWN YOUR RISK OF HEART ATTACK:

It appears that elderly men, at

least, can significantly reduce their risk of heart attack by simply

walking. According to conclusions drawn from nearly 2,700 men in their

seventies, eighties, and early nineties, those who walked more than 1.5

miles a day were half as likely to suffer a heart attack as those who

walked less than a quarter mile a day. The researchers, led by Robert

Abbott of the University of Virginia School of Medicine in

Charlottesville, say walking helps stave off blood clots, irregular

heartbeat, and fatty deposits within arteries. In their findings,

published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, men

walking less than a quarter mile a day had a 5 percent chance of heart

attack. Those with 1.5 miles a day had a 2.5 percent risk. Abbott says

their data do not include how many years or how vigorously the men

walked, but "the earlier we start, the easier it is to continue those

habits later on."
