Salt Glow Formula

Adapted from Rosemary Gladstar's Herbs for Natural Beauty, by Rosemary Gladstar.

This recipe is far too easy for the remarkable benefits it gives. Again, it is the simple gifts of life that are often the best. Salt glow is one of my favorite exfoliating treatments. It leaves the skin feeling silky soft and renewed, relaxed but refreshed.

Simple Solution:

I first had the opportunity to experience this wonderful body therapy while camping in southeastern Ohio. Two women friends were insistent on treating me, and being the glutton I am for goodness, I acquiesced. As they rubbed salt and oils over my body, massaging and gently scrubbing it in, then rinsing it off with warm water, I knew I had reached heaven. I know, it sounds like I'm exaggerating. Well, try it.

Similar recipes are a favorite treatment at many famous and expensive spas. But it's so wonderfully simple, inexpensive, and easy to do that you should try it at home. Invite a friend over for a "salt glow exchange." It's nicest to do it outside where you can rinse off the salt and not worry about getting it everywhere. For best storage, place in a cool area.

2 cups fine sea salt

4 cups grapeseed, apricot or almond oil

20-30 drops essential oil of choice

1. Place salt in a widemouthed jar and cover with grapeseed, apricot, or almond oil. Scent with essential oil.

2. To use, dampen your entire body. Using either your hands or a loofah mit, vigorously but gently massage the salt and oil mixture into the skin. Begin at the feet and work upward in a circular motion. Be careful to avoid any scratched or wounded areas. When you have massaged the entire body, rinse with warm water. Finish with a dry-towel rub.

Reasons to stop eating white sugar.

Sucrose.... generally termed table sugar is hard to digest...it catalyzes slowly ...the reason it catalyzes slowly is because it lacks mineral and vitamin content. It takes two routes in digestion... one for quick energy which is too quick for cellular comfort and the next for storage as fat... the latter becomes resistant fat....which is resistant to be digested into useful energy...therefore being the last thing the body wants to burn.

Make your own deoderant.

Most people think that antiperspirants and deodorants are the same thing, but they aren't. Antiperspirants work by clogging, closing, or blocking the pores with powerful astringents such as aluminum salts so that they can't release sweat. (Note that aluminum can accumulate in the brain.) Deodorants work by neutralizing the smell of the sweat and by antiseptic action against bacteria. Deodorants are preferable because they don't interfere with sweating, a natural cooling process.

Baking Soda Simple Solution

Baking soda works wonders because it neutralizes the odor of sweat. Just sprinkle a light covering of baking soda onto a damp washcloth. Pat on. Don't rinse. This tip-just using baking soda-has saved me on many occasion, especially when traveling.

Basic Deodorant Powder

1/2 cup baking soda

1/2 cup cornstarch

a few drops essential oils such as lavender or cinnamon

Place the ingredients in a glass jar. Shake to blend. Sprinkle a light covering of the powder on a damp washcloth. Pat on. Don't rinse.

Basic Liquid Deodorant

1/4 cup each witch hazel extract, aloe vera gel, and mineral water

1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin

a few drops antibacterial essential oils such as lavender (optional)

Combine the ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake to blend.

Makes 3/4 cup

Shelf Life: Indefinite

To quickly and easily separate pomegranate seeds from the rind and

white membrane without a huge mess, first fill a large bowl with cold

water. Cut the pomegranate in half from the stem top down. Cut or

break each half into about three sections. Put the pieces into the

water and break and pull the white membrane apart from the seeds with

your fingers. The seeds will float to the top.

Get rid of body odor

1 Use pH-balanced soaps and skincare products to maintain the protective acid mantle of your skin. Try bathing in an apple vinegar wash twice a week. Pour 2 cups of apple vinegar in your bath.

2 Get the right underarm protection. Deodorants help destroy bacteria and disguise odors. But look out for potentially toxic, irritating ingredients. Avoid aluminum (linked to Alzheimer's disease) and products with emulsifiers (known to clog pores). Consider products with tea tree oil, known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties. Or use a deodorant stone, made from mineral salts. Antiperspirants reduce bacteria-feeding moisture -- but they block sweat glands and contain aluminum chlorohydrate.

3 Use one-part cornstarch to one-part baking soda to absorb moisture. Deodorize feet after bathing with a mixture of 1 cup cornstarch to 1 cup baking soda and 6 drops of either eucalyptus or peppermint oil.

4 Cut down on dairy products and sugar. Protect your gastro tract from yeast-enhancing sugar. Look out for hidden Sugars in everything from hot dogs, mayonnaise and soups to nondairy creamers and cream-style corn.

5 Take 25 mg to 50 mg of zinc daily or eat foods high in zinc. Try eggs, lean meat and pumpkin seeds.

6 Detoxify your system regularly. It's the only way to keep your liver and gastrointestinal tract functioning at optimal levels -- and potential body odor at bay. You may find my Living Beauty Detox Diet Program (HarperSanFrancisco 2000) a helpful tool. It outlines an easy-to-follow, three-day plan in sync with the body's natural detoxification cycles.

7 Include friendly flora and a fiber supplement in your regimen. Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacteria can reestablish the proper pH balance in your digestive system. Adding a fiber supplement will gently whisk away that waste buildup.

8 Drink 10-12 glasses of water daily. Flush toxins from your body and keep metabolic processes humming along at peak levels.

9 Maintain a balanced diet. Overloading or cutting back in vital areas can throw your system off and aggravate glandular secretions. Adapt a diet of 30 percent lean protein, to help the liver develop a sufficient amount of enzymes for the detox process; 30 percent essential fats (such as flaxseed oil, nuts, avocados and seeds), to lubricate the GI tract; and 40 percent slow-acting/high-fiber carbohydrates to sweep out that encrusted mass.

Ann Louise Gittleman is a leader in cutting-edge nutrition. She has over 1.5 book titles to her credit. Her latest title is The Living Beauty Detox Diet Program.
